Moot Beit Din

Imagine taking a scenario ripped from the headlines on a contemporary hot button issue from fields like environmental sustainability, bio-medical ethics, or human rights. Then, study what the great sages of Jewish law said about similar circumstances in their time and debate what you believe to be the correct Jewish legal response to the situation today. It’s like Mock Trial meets the Talmud. But that’s just the beginning!  Next, your legal team writes up a response and sends it off to a panel of real experts in the field for review and response.  Finally, you compete with other teen teams from across North America and debate just like mock trials.

Our first Mock Trial team competed in Florida at the end of March 2016 and won second place in their division!  Well done, Team BSS!

USY & KADIMA

United Synagogue Youth (USY) and Kadima inspire Jewish youth to explore, celebrate and practice ethical values, Jewish Living, Zionism, and community responsibility based on the ideology of the Conservative Movement.  For more than 60 years, USY and Kadima have been engaging and educating Jewish youth across North America, teaching them about life, friendship, religion and leadership while changing their lives forever.

Beth Sholom’s chapters of USY (for grades 9-12) and Kadima (for grades 6-8) are members of the Ein Gedi Sub-Region, which is part of the Hanegev Region of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.  HaMelech Kadima & USY (HaMelech means ‘the king’ in Hebrew) has diverse programming which includes social, social action/community service, religious education, and other programs with youth from the Southeast Region. USY and Kadima provide wonderful opportunities for Jewish teens and tweens to connect with each other, as well as with other teens in the region’s many participating states. We offer a comfortable and enjoyable environment for teens to discover and/or strengthen their Jewish identity.

HaNegev is the South-East Region of USY/Kadima and covers Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Southern North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas, Barbados, Puerto Rico, and Cuba.
