Lifelong Jewish Learning ...for School-Age Children

At Beth Sholom, growing in Jewish knowledge, spirit, and values is inextricably tied to dynamic experiences. Our teachers are seasoned, professional, knowledgeable and nurturing, but most of all, passionate about Judaism. Small classes mean each child benefits from personal attention. Our children learn about Judaism by “doing Jewish.”
Shabbat Learning Community—Beth Sholom comes together as a community on Shabbat morning, and many of our learning activities take place on Shabbat as well.
Shabbat brings public, private, and day school families together to learn and celebrate.
*An asterisk below means that this program is open to children who attend Jewish day school as well as our supplemental religious education programs.
Religious School
At Beth Sholom, Hebrew and Judaics are taught in small classes with excellent, experienced teachers. Our instructors work with your child's learning style and abilities. Instruction is on Thursday afternoons and on Shabbat mornings. Click here to register for Religious School.
Junior Congregation*
Open to all children grades one through six, Junior Congregation is a developmentally appropriate Jewish worship experience. Our children study and use the Hebrew skills from either day school or synagogue classes to further develop and become comfortable with synagogue skills. Their learning occurs in spiritually enriching, gently guided way, in the comfort of peers, parents and teachers. Toward the end of services (around 11:30), the children join the adult congregation in the sanctuary, and everyone is invited to Kiddush luncheon together.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Training*
In the year prior to their coming of age, our students experience a formal graduated series of one-on-one tutoring and coaching stages for leading prayers, chanting Torah, and chanting Haftarah. As they learn, our students take on increased leadership roles on Shabbat in Junior Congregation. They then graduate to weekly participation in Shabbat services in the main sanctuary so they are well prepared to lead the congregation, family, and guests in worship on their big day. The individual attention allows for adjustment for different learning styles, disabilities or sensitivities. For more information, visit our Bar/Bat Mitzvah page.
Holiday Happenings*
Almost every Jewish holiday at Beth Sholom has fun family learning programming that goes along with it. From Chocolate Seders, Purim Spiels, to Rosh Hashanah Family Feud, we celebrate the Jewish holidays together.
Our youth programs are made possible by the generous grant support of the Memphis Jewish Federation.
