Shir Chadash - Musical Kabbalat Shabbat

Shir Chadash, Beth Sholom's unique ecstatic, musical, meditative Kabbalat Shabbat experience, is a highly spiritual and fun Jewish service carefully designed to bring fresh life into prayer.
But what does "ecstatic, musical, meditative Kabbalat Shabbat experience" mean?

Kabbalat Shabbat - The Friday night service for welcoming Shabbat. We take pieces of the traditional service that are small enough for those unfamiliar with the traditional service to follow, but deep enough for those who know the service.

Meditative - Instead of rushing through prayers to get them done, we spend time on one or two lines, doing them over and over to allow everyone to learn the prayer, sing along, and spend some time contemplating the meaning. The repetition allows us to go deeper, to engage our hearts, souls, and minds.

Musical - We use musical instruments to help increase the ebbs and flows of the experience and enable a more impactful spiritual experience.  The service is a journey that explores many different sides of human emotional and spiritual experience.

Ecstatic - This is joyous music that grows in emotion and energy, bringing the congregation on a deep spiritual journey.  You'll want to sing loudly and happily!  Some are moved to get up and dance!

The Kabbalat Shabbat prayers recommend that we sing a Shir Chadash--a  new song--that will raise our spiritual experience and connect us to God. Shir Chadash is our community's way of constantly renewing our prayer experience, our way of using song, creativity, and community to explore the spiritual journey that is welcoming Shabbat.
